TITBITS is a series of ceramic figures exploring beauty, humor, glamour and pleasure.

The name comes from ‘Herring Titbits’, a delicacy I once shared with my father small bites in a beautiful tin. That mix of indulgence and presentation carries into my work.

Each titbit, about eight centimeters tall, plays with the idea of perfection. They lack something, or have too much. How much can a body miss or exceed before its beauty is questioned?

Shaped in clay, adorned with gold, pearls, silver, and coral, the series features six characters: BORRY, BARRY, BERRY, BUFFY, ENZO, and RO. Each tell their own story through form, attitude and material.

All TITBITS are one of a kind and handmade by Rotterdam based artist Maik Mager.

Known to many simply as ‘Mager’, I was born and raised in my father’s pottery factory in Maastricht. After a short career at the Porceleyne Flesin Delft, I taught arts at Willem de Kooning Academy for 40 years. Now, retired for several years, I have become evermore fascinated by the idea of beauty of the human body in relation to current times. With TITBITS, I use clay and jewels to explore my own questions on beauty: being too much, having too little, being erotic, playful, the role of humor and decadence.
